A Toast to Mothers: Ancient Traditions, Modern Celebrations, and Mead from Coventry, CT

At Dragonfire Meadery in Coventry, CT, we know that honoring mothers is a tradition as old as time — and what better way to celebrate than with a glass of handcrafted mead? As Mother’s Day approaches, we’re looking back at how people across the ages have honored motherhood, from ancient festivals to today’s heartfelt celebrations.

Ancient Greek and Roman Festivals: Honoring the Mother Goddesses

Long before Mother’s Day cards and bouquets, the ancient Greeks and Romans paid tribute to powerful mother figures. The Greeks celebrated Rhea, the mother of the gods, with ceremonies full of offerings and joyous gatherings. In Rome, the goddess Cybele was honored with lively festivals recognizing her as the life-giving spirit of nature. These celebrations often involved food, drink, and community — not too different from the festive spirit we embrace today at Dragonfire Meadery!

Mothering Sunday in England: A Sweet Homecoming

In 17th-century England, a holiday called Mothering Sunday gave hardworking daughters and sons a chance to return home. Celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, it became a day for family reunions, special church services, and sweet treats. Children would often bring small gifts — perhaps something homemade, much like the handcrafted care that goes into every bottle of mead we create here in Coventry.

While the holiday may have changed over time, its heart remains the same: honoring those who nurture, guide, and love unconditionally.

The Birth of Modern Mother’s Day

In the United States, Mother’s Day as we know it was founded by Anna Jarvis in the early 1900s. The first official event took place in 1908, designed as a heartfelt tribute to mothers' love and sacrifice. Today, the tradition continues, often celebrated with family gatherings, thoughtful gifts, and — for those looking for something truly special — a bottle of Dragonfire Meadery mead to toast the occasion.

Celebrate with Pu Lao: A Mead Made for Mothers

Pu Lao is soft yet complex—like the best moms. The sweetness of ripe pear meets the warmth of cinnamon and the zesty lift of ginger. It’s comforting, elegant, and perfect for a spring afternoon.

Pair It With: Pear & Ricotta Tart with Honey Ginger Drizzle

Ingredients:

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed)

  • 2 ripe pears, thinly sliced

  • 1 cup ricotta cheese

  • 2 tbsp honey

  • Zest of 1 lemon

  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • Optional: crushed pistachios or edible flowers for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Roll out puff pastry onto parchment. Score a 1/2-inch border around the edges.

  3. Mix ricotta, 1 tbsp honey, lemon zest, and ginger in a bowl.

  4. Spread the ricotta mixture inside the border.

  5. Arrange pear slices over the top, slightly overlapping. Dust with cinnamon.

  6. Bake for 20–25 minutes, until the pastry is golden and puffed.

  7. Drizzle with remaining honey, sprinkle pistachios or flowers if desired.
